It is said in Shrimad Bhagvad Gita, an important hindu sanskrit scripture, that Mathura and Vrindavan are the constant abodes of the Lord on Earth. It is also said that those who offer prayers to Lord Krishna in these sacred cities, they get purified and reach the Lord when they die.

One can also find prevalence of Buddhist monastries in Mathura which were constructed under the reignsof Ashoka, the Mauryan emperor who ruled India in the third 3rd century B.C. The city was an important center of art and culture during that time.
