Famous Buddhist Monasteries in India

India is a known pilgrimage destinations and the reasons behind it is the varied religion followed. Buddhism began in India and slowly spread in other parts of the world. India encompasses number of buddhist pilgrimage spots where you can closely experience Buddhist culture, ceremonies and traditions. Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Ladakh and Sikkim are four main Buddhist destinations of India where you should visit to spectacle Buddhism.

Famous Buddhist Monasteries in India

Enchaey Monastery:
Situated in Gangtok, Enchaey Monastery is amongst the oldest monasteries of Sikkim. It follows the famous Nyingma Order and was constructed with an aim that no other monastery would be constructed after that.

Alchi Gompa :
Dating back 1000 AD, Alchi Gompa was constructed by the Rinchen Zangpo. This is amongst the famous Gompas of Ladakh and is often thronged by thousands of visitors every year.

Rumtek Monastery:
This is yet another important monastery of Sikkim. It is the seat of His Holiness Gyawla Karmapa the XVI, the head of the Karma Kagyu order of Tibetan Buddhism. Nestled at the height of 5800 ft, Rumtek Monastery have temple, a retreat and meditation centre, monastic college to explore.

Hemis Monastery:
It is amongst the wealthiest and biggest monastery of Ladakh. Founded by the first incarnation of Stagsang Raspa Nawang Gyatso, the Hemis Monastery dates back to 1630.

Famous Buddhist Monasteries of Bhutan


Being a spiritual state Bhutan is often visited to enlightened our soul. Takstang Monastery
This is one of the most talked about monastery of the world. Nestled 3000 feet above the valley, Takstang Monasteries is also known as the Tiger Nest Monastery. Constructed in the year 1692, Takstang Monasteries itself comprises of seven temples filled with devotees and visitors.



Punakha Monastery
Completed in the year 1638, the Punakha Monasteries resides in the old capital of the country- Punakha. It is the second largest monasteries of the world. The monastery nestled itself at the confluence of two famous rivers - Pho Chhu and the second is Mo Chhu. 

 

Tango Monastery
Another famous Buddhist Monastery, Tango Monastery is located 14 kms away from Thimpu Bhutan.Founded in 13th century, Tango Monasteries founded by Lama Gyalwa Lhanampa. It belongs to the Drukpa Kagyu School of Buddhism in Bhutan.
